Visible Voice
With “Visible Voice” Monobanda wants to offer a safe and inviting environment for children and youth dealing with intelligible behaviour, to better cope with feelings of aggression and anxiety.
This is achieved by translating emotions, expressed vocally and physically, to visual images, using a multi-medial installation. We work in co-creation with these youths, teachers and group supervisors and several designers and programmers.
The final goal of this project is to offer users a tool by which they reflect on and manage their emotions in a playful way.
The current prototype exists of various ‘acts’ which all address a unique facet of emotion management.
For more information check out our monthly Visible Voice blog.
Act 1: Expression
The first act invites youth to express themselves and release their built up tension and unrest by moving and making sounds in whatever way they want. Everywhere they move, a line follows them that changes colours based on the sounds the youth makes.
Act 2: Insight
A spirograph appears which can be used by the youth to paint by moving in various ways and creating sounds. The colour and thickness of the paintbrush changes depending on how the youth expresses themselves; different movements and sounds create different paintings.
Act 3: Regulation
The youth is invited to lie down. Via a mirror on the ceiling they can see themselves becoming a part of their painting. Soothing music plays and the calmer and stiller the youth is, the clearer the imprint is of their body which appears in the painting.
Act 4: Conversation
The painting is printed out. Together with their caretaker, youths can use this painting to discuss what they see and how this reflects how they felt and behaved while interacting with Visible Voice. They can also reflect on how painting of various sessions differ.
